PHNOM PENH, Dec 21 (Cambodia Herald)-Prime Minister Hun Sen today announced that the government will turn North East into another economic development area in order to narrow the economic gap between the urban and rural area.
" In 2020, we will establish another economic development zone which will be in North East," Hun Sen said in Ratanakiri where he attended the Inauguration Ceremony of the SOS Children’s Village.
Hun Sen said that so far Cambodia has had three main economic development zones, which are Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk province, and Siem Reap.
Hun Sen said that North East zone will become the agro-industry and mining resouce development.
The Prime Minister added that the North East Economic zone will cover five provinces which are Mondolkiri, Ratanak Kiri, Stoeung Treng, Kratie, and Preah Vihear provinces.
According to the Prime Minister, the establishment of the North East Economic zone is to narrow the economic gap between the urban and rural area.
Prime Minister Hun Sen is optimistic that Cambodia will enjoy 7% economic growth in 2011 as the poverty rate is reduced by % annually.
However, the gap between the rich and the poor remain a major concern of the kingdom.
