Zhen Yun Garment Factory Co Ltd has agreed to some of the demands of about 400 workers who went on strike last week, including paying annual bonuses early next month. The agreement followed a meeting on Friday between representatives of workers and factory management at the labour ministry.
Prum Veasna, deputy of the labor dispute department at the ministry, said yesterday that the company had agreed to pay annual bonuses on October 10.
“The company wants the workers to change annual bonuses to holidays, but the workers did not agree,” he said. “What is important is for all sides to be tolerant.”
Prum Veasna said the main cause of the strike at the factory in the capital’s Dangkor district was a request from workers for an advance of US$20 each ahead of the Pchum Ben holidays. Management initially rejected the request.
Kan Sovy said the Taiwanese-owned factory had also agreed to start paying legal overtime rates and that department heads that used inappropriate language with staff would be disciplined. Union representative Heng Sara said workers would resume their strike if the company did not follow through on Friday’s agreement.
