SIEM REAP (Cambodia Herald) Security is tight ahead of an ASEAN foreign ministers meeting here this week with 1,450 police, military police and soldiers deployed at the airport and eight hotels, Siem Reap Police Commissioner Sot Nady said Monday. “We are ready," he said. "Security has been tightened from the Siem Reap airport to the hotels where the ASEAN foreign ministers will stay and work."
The meetings of senior officials and ministers are taking place between Tuesday and Thursday at the Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort and Spa, where police have installed electronic checkpoints.
The meetings, which come ahead of a summit of ASEAN leaders in Phnom Penh on April 3 and 4, are expected to cover issues such as overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea, increasing "connectivity" between the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and human rights.
